Stick in Link: Development camp updates, Ryan Miller analysis, and Dane Fox with an owl

It’s time for “Stick in Link”, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Wednesday during the summer. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at passittobulis@gmail.com, tweet us @passittobulis, or just come over and write your link on a pad of paper, I guess.)

  • With Doug Lidster hired and Glen Gulutzan retained, the Canucks coaching staff for next season is complete, but they have no idea who’s going to run the power play. Sounds good, guys. [Vancouver Sun]
  • Thanks to a solid second tier featuring the likes of Cole Cassels, Ben Hutton, and Thatcher Demko, this is the best the Canucks’ prospect pool has looked for a long time. [The Province]
  • New Canucks prospect Jared McCann plays for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, one of the most progressive teams in Major Junior in the area of advanced statistics. Their GM, Kyle Dubas, answered some questions about McCann, revealed some of the Greyhounds’ internal statistics on him, and talked about why McCann is an elite prospect despite his non-elite point totals. This is well-worth the read. [Canucks Army]
  • Thatcher Demko is blogging from Canucks prospect development camp and he’s throwing shade at Jared McCann: “I think the rust is off, having to stop Bo Horvat’s shots has helped. He’s got a great shot, Jared McCann doesn’t, so you know. I close my eyes a lot of the time ;) ” [Canucks]
  • Jim Benning has said that the Canucks don’t want to rush Bo Horvat, but the stocky centre thinks he’s ready to make the jump to the NHL. [The Globe and Mail]
  • Dane Fox may have scored 64 goals last season and Jim Benning likes his edge and willingness to go to the net, but he still has things to improve: “He still needs work to do off the ice to get in good physical condition. His skating, his first two steps need to continue to get better.” [Metro News]
  • If hockey doesn’t work out for Fox, he could always take over for Joey Kenward. He interviews Bo Horvat and Miles Liberati and exchanges barbs with Horvat on needing to work on his faceoffs. Just work on that eye contact, Fox. [CanucksTV]

  • Cam Charron on whether the Canucks actually upgraded at the goaltending position with the signing of Ryan Miller: “Trying to improve the Canucks goaltending is like a news anchor spending more time ironing his pants when his boss complains about his on-air appearance.” [Canucks Army]
  • The Canucks Hockey Blog podcast talks Ryan Miller, Radim Vrbata, and make some early predictions for next season. [Canucks Hockey Blog]
  • Are the Canucks rebuilding or remodeling? Or, secret option C, are they throwing up some new curtains, adding a rug they bought from a thrift store that “really ties the room together” and calling it good? [Too Many Men on the Site]
  • Want to watch over an hour of the Canucks season-ticket holders summer summit? Of course you do. And you can! That wasn’t just a rhetorical question designed to set up an expectation that would end up unrealized! [CanucksTV]

  • Here’s Zanstorm with his thoughts on the latest from the Canucks coaches and management team. [Nucks Misconduct]
  • Is Nick Bonino the answer at second line centre? Probably not, but he might better be envisioned as an upgrade on Mike Santorelli. [Canucks Army]
  • Why isn’t anyone talking about the real story of Doug Lidster’s hiring: how much he looks like Jerry Seinfeld? [VanCity Buzz]

Did you link to that Two Men post to incite the regs here? My gawd, that’s a sorry piece of writing and ‘perspective.’

So is Dane Fox a credible prospect now or are we just giving him his 15 minutes of fame? Don’t get me wrong, I would love the former…

I would say he’s credible, though it’s more realistic to see him having a future as a grinding, bottom-six forward rather than a scoring, top-six forward. He’s not the typical undrafted forward with a breakout over-age year, as he was originally expected to be a third-round draft pick in his first year of eligibility, but didn’t due to off-ice, character concerns rather than on-ice concerns, then suffered a bad injury in the next season.
