Join us in saying goodbye to Roberto Luongo with ‘Goalie in the wind’ [VIDEO]

Welp. Roberto Luongo is gone. It’s a pretty big shock. Granted, I’ve been speculating on this for a little while now. And that god I published that post earlier today, instead of scheduling it for 2pm like I had originally planned. But it’s still weird to think that the Roberto Luongo era in Vancouver is over.

Why, just last summer, we wrote “Big Old Goal“, singing Roberto Luongo back to Vancouver after the shocking events of the 2013 trade deadline forced him to stay. And now we’re saying goodbye to him.

Seems to me that deserves a song as well. So I made one. Here’s “Goalie in the Wind”.

The lyrics to this dumb, hastily-composed piece of music:

Goodbye Bobby Lu
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While rumours around you swirled
They came down to ice level
And they asked you to waive your clause
They pulled you from a practice
Then they didn’t make a trade

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a goalie in the wind
Wishing you were back in Florida
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have seen you
Raise the Cup instead
Your candle burned out long before
Your contract ever did

Coming back was tough
The toughest role you ever played
You said your contract sucks
And that was the price you paid
Even when you played
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Luongo still wanted a trade

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a goalie in the wind
Wishing you were back in Florida
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have see you
Play in BC Place
But Tortorella went with Lack
What a damn disgrace

Goodbye Bobby Lu
Though I never knew you at all
I found you on Twitter
And you tweeted some funny stuff
Goodbye Bobby Lu
From the young fans in Vancouver
Who sees you as something more than a contract
More than just Roberto Luongo

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a goalie in the wind
Wishing you were back in Florida
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have seen you
Raise the Cup instead
Your candle burned out long before
Your contract ever did

Bye, Funny Bob. You were funny.

I wish I didn’t feel this way about hockey.

    Goodbye, Lu.

    For one last time…. Luuuuuuuuuuuu

Enjoy sunny Florida Funny Bob, far far away from this stinky mess called Canucks. I’m sad to see you leave but also happy that you are going back home.

But please be sure to come back in a few years, to watch your #1 jersey hanging on the rafters… To me you are always a Canuck, and one of the greatest at that.

This is just plain brilliant work. Goalie in the Wind… too funny! I bet Roberto’s shock has already passed; in a few days he’s going to feel exactly like the proverbial rat fleeing the sinking… well, you know. Good Ship Canuck, floundering on the rocks. Yes, it’s time for metaphor and philosophy; it has to be, since hockey is no longer played by the team in blue. Even better metaphor: Know what tomorrow (March 5) is? Last day of the seige of the Alamo. 1836; look it up. Attack came pre-dawn, and there were no survivors. Eerie parallel? Cue Twilight Zone theme and out…

Well, this song kind of wins everything. And it made this sad day a bit brighter, so thanks, Harrison. And thanks, Lu…

Lu – the best goalie in Canucks history…unfortunately the most disrespected too. Thanks Bobby Lu for the 252 wins.

Wasn’t sure whether to expect Candle in the Wind or Dust in the Wind, so I HAD to click.

You won’t believe what happened next.
