Team Canada looked a little too Canadian on Thursday versus Norway, sacrificing their own goal differential to make the Norwegians feel good about themselves. It was a kind and courteous performance, the sort that Canadians are known for around the world.
Except when it comes to hockey. Do you want to know why Canada is so nice? Because we take all that aggression, competitiveness, and desire to crush our foes, and we channel it into hockey. On Thursday, Canada simply didn’t, and one had to worry that if they continued to play accommodating, gentle hockey, Canadians at home would soon invert our hockey and non-hockey personalities and become a nation of jerks.
Thankfully, Team Canada restored the balance on Friday, beating up on Austria. I was overcome with love for my fellow man when I watched this game.
