Stick in Link: Canucks need Burrows back; Kassian should be a perimeter player

It’s time for “Stick in Link”, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Tuesday and Thursday. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at, tweet us @passittobulis, or just come over and write your link on a pad of paper, I guess.)

  • Buried in this Alex Burrows article by Jason Botchford is the revelation that Henrik Sedin likely has an injured finger, possibly broken, which is what would have kept him from taking a single faceoff against the Penguins on Tuesday. I’m a little concerned, because the last time he had a broken finger, he had doctors amputate off the tip to speed up the recovery process. Seriously. [The Province]
  • Should Zack Kassian be more of a perimeter player? The answer may surprise you. Man, I feel terrible for using such a link-baiting line, but it’s true. Next I’ll be telling you about one weird trick that Kassian uses that has experts baffled. [Canucks]
  • Unreal post-game quote from Dan Bylsma: “It takes an incredible amount of coaching expertise and situational savvy to ask the best player in the world to ‘go do something about this, please’. I coached a helluva game tonight.” And I mean literally unreal. He didn’t actually say that. [Legion of Blog]
  • To re-sign or not re-sign Mike Santorelli? That is the question.Whether ’tis nobler to wait until the off-season and risk the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take pen to a brand new contract, and by signing end the motivation to perform? [Van City Buzz]
  • The biggest surprise from John Tortorella this season? How calm he remains in post-game interviews, despite the team’s recent struggles. [Nucks Misconduct]
  • Cam Charron breaks down why Dan Hamhuis and Marc-Edouard Vlasic are good picks on defence for Team Canada. [Canucks Army]
  • The top three Canuck plays of the first half of the season feature some Wizardous Sedinery. [Canucks]
  • Tony Gallagher is really concerned about how the Canucks perform against heavy teams. Good thing John Scott plays in the Eastern Conference. [The Province]
  • Bo Horvat may not have won a medal at the World Junior tournament, but Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman, who attended the tournament, seems happy with how he played. [Vancouver Sun]
  • Get to know Darren Archibald, who has become a fan favourite for the Canucks’ farm team. [Utica Comets]
  • Benn Ferriero’s call-up to the Canucks proved to be a short one, as he’s been sent back to Utica after just two games. Frankly, the Comets need him a lot more than the Canucks do. [TSN]
  • The Utica Comets continue to struggle, which is understandable when some of their best players have been called up to the Canucks. Josh Weissbock has the comprehensive update on the Canucks’ prospects. [Canucks Army]
  • Cole Cassels has been a major offensive contributor for the Oshawa Generals this season, scoring 41 points in 35 games, but he dropped the gloves in a game against the Barrie Colts after an ugly hit by Tyson Fawcett. Kudos for sticking up for his teammate, but after seeing his fight against the 5’7″ Fawcett, I think Cassels should stick to racking up points. [Hockey Fights]

Seriously, what isn’t Tony Gallagher concerned about?

Shall we all just pretend that the close proximity of these two bullet points one after the other was completely by chance?:

◦Who do Canucks fans love to hate? Other than themselves, of course.
◦Tony Gallagher is really concerned about how the Canucks perform against heavy teams.

    Or perhaps it wasn’t…

I only clicked that Kassian link because you admitted you felt bad about the line you used. I appreciate that.

glad to see others share my opinion of the “yellow journalist from another era” (TG). I have read so much of his slanted, biased and often fact-free stuff that I just don’t know how he keeps “biting the hand that feeds him” and how the Nux haven’t re-assigned his press pass.

BTW, Nux, if you’re listening, I am sure that i can offer a much more fair’n'balanced perspective!!!

Let’s harken back to reality for a moment to the first St Louis game this year.

The Blues, a strong, physical contender that play a methodical and relentless game had a week off prior to the game. The Nux were on a 7 in 11 stretch, travelled cross continent, had 5 starters injured and flew in the day of the game for a back to back. They pulled off an heroic and gutsy win.

So how does TG characterize this “game of the year” for the Nux? TG’s take on that was a snide comment that the “Blues failed to show up!!!”

Seriously? Talk about fact free! IMO, this was the Nux guttsiest win of the year but TG can’t even allow that to besmirch his unbroken record of douchery. Perhaps, you could offer TG a tutorial on how to capture the essence of a game beyond just venting personal bias and dislike? We would all be grateful.
