Old man gets call for Team USA, because Ryan Kesler changed his number

USA Hockey made a couple of curious calls Wednesday in announcing the men’s roster for Sochi, most notably Brooks Orpik and Paul Martin over Keith Yandle, and the snub of Bobby Ryan. They also made one curious text.

While the rest of the world learned who would be heading to Russia when those adorable kids skated out towards the camera and pivoted, revealing the roster via nameplate, the 2013 Olympians were informed via text message.

Except for Ryan Kesler. As Gord Miller reports, Kesler has recently changed his number. An old Canadian dude has it now. And thus, an old Canadian dude was invited to Sochi:

Truthfully, apart from the issue of citizenship, this old man being asked to rep the stars and stripes is really no sillier than the Mighty Ducks being asked to do the same in D2.

No arguing that one. Especially Canucks fans. For one thing, the old dude would probably slow down USA’s top six attack quite a bit, and for another, it’s difficult to watch Kesler play for the other team, because then the fan blinders come off and you realize what a colossal nuisance his entire existence is.

There are still fans in this city that haven’t forgiven Kesler for his performance in 2010.

USA Hockey is going to like Kesler, though, especially since he appears to be back to playing the sort of hockey that made him a breakout star for the program four years ago. As Scott Burnside reports in this great look at how the team was put together, Kesler’s health was a concern for much of the selection process, but his strong start to the 2013-14 season did away with those concerns rather quickly. By the end of November, he was a lock.

Makes sense. The way he’s playing these days, as we prepare to transform Pass it to Bulis into Pass it to Zamuner for the Olympic break, I think I’d prefer that the text message was binding.

This is great. Can you imagine being that Vancouver man? That’s a pretty cool text to receive, even though it’s not actually for him.

Yeah, I’d be curious just to see how they worded the message!

“Yo Kes u made th team
      -Danny B.”
