Stick in Link: Alex Burrows out with broken jaw; Horvat, Shinkaruk to Team Canada selection camp

It’s time for “Stick in Link”, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Tuesday and Thursday. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at passittobulis@gmail.com, tweet us @passittobulis, or just come over and write your link on a pad of paper, I guess.)

  • According to an as-yet unconfirmed report by the Team 1040, Alex Burrows has a broken jaw and is out indefinitely, because his luck just wasn’t bad enough yet. [The Province]
  • Gino Odjick has reportedly been admitted to the psychiatric ward at the Pierre-Janet Hospital Centre in Gatineau, Quebec for concussion-related issues. [Canucks Army]
  • Both Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk have been invited to Team Canada’s final selection camp for the World Junior Tournament. No Brendan Gaunce, unfortunately, but he was a long shot to begin with. [Hockey Canada]
  • Speaking of  Horvat, he had 3 assists in his game on Saturday against the Peterborough Petes, giving him 24 points in 13 games in the month of November. [OHL Network]
  • Eddie Lack tweeted out a sneak peak of the design for his goalie pads for the Heritage Classic. They look pretty neat. Regrettably, if all goes well, they’ll spend the entire game behind the boards, as I assume Roberto Luongo will get the start. [Twitter]
  • The Canucks play of the week: Jason Garrison’s game-winning power play goal against the Ottawa Senators. [Nucks Misconduct]
  • Alex Edler reportedly came close to becoming a Red Wing last summer, but Mike Gillis wanted an arm, a leg, and Ken Holland’s firstborn child in return, which killed the deal. [The Canuck Way]
  • If you’re wondering why the Canucks twitter avatar featured a red, white, and blue colour scheme the other day, it’s because they lost a Movember bet with the Montreal Canadiens. [TSN]
  • Yesterday’s Behind the Lens featured a guest appearance from Manny Malhotra and his adorable children. Also, I just noticed that the Canucks all have identical blue and neon yellow Nike runners. [Canucks]
  • Re: Burrows’ goal-saving play against the Hurricanes. Burrows: “I just tried to throw it between his butterfly.” Lack: “You know he’s yelling in French, so no one knows what he’s saying…so I thought: OK, I’m just going to lay back and do the sea turtle.” [Vancouver Sun]
  • In the Chris Higgins edition of King of the Rink, Henrik Sedin talks up his abs, while Kevin Bieksa brings up his long fingernails. I’m sure there are people out there who will find him more attractive thanks to that information. [Canucks TV]

Is Sedin blatantly disregarding the “non-NHL” stipulation (wouldn’t Higgins be an Isles fan anyway?), or is he referring to the Rangers that play in Glasgow (or Texas), heh?

This must be the most frustrating season of all for Burrows. Please, let nothing else happen to him. Oh yea, when he comes back, let him score a goal, or 10.

SO I guess this means Kassian is back in the lineup, which isn’t necessarily terrible, but more terrible I suspect Sestito will also CONTINUE to be in!?!

I know absolutely nothing about Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk. If you guys had to compare their ceiling each of them to an established NHL player right now, who would it be?

From what I remember from draft day, Horvat’s game is comparable to Patrice Bergeron (again, ceiling).

Horvat’s also been compared to Jeff Skinner and Shinkaruk to Zach Parise. Both look like elite offensive talents, Horvat also in the defensive side. Too bad Gaunce didn’t make it but no surprise given Sutter’s comments.

Bad to hear that about Burrows. He deserved better this year.

I haven’t seen Horvat compared to Skinner. That’s an odd comparison, as Horvat’s game doesn’t remind me as much of Skinner as Shinkaruk’s game.

Yes, Horvat has been compared to Bergeron, as well as Ryan O’Reilly. Shinkaruk has been compared to Patrick Kane, but that’s pretty optimistic. I’ve also seen comparisons with Zach Parise, Jeff Skinner, Phil Kessel, and even Evander Kane. That’s a pretty diverse group of players, but it’s fair to say that his ceiling is first line offensive winger, with potential star quality.

ya, i was gonna say patrick kane. the wide stance, the balance, the shot and the nose for the net. and hopefully less so the penchant for getting stupid with booze.

Poor Burrows. That is brutally unlucky.

I hope that Dale Weise didn’t aggravate Burrows’ injury by playfully jabbing him in the jaw.

Burrows is unlucky? This is what happens when you meet a stranger in the alps…er…This is all Tortorella’s fault. IMO, what really happened is Tortorella(aka the happy poker) took him out with an errant poke.
