Darren Archibald runs over Karl Stollery in hit-of-the-year candidate [VIDEO]

Darren Archibald was a pleasant surprise in his 8-game call-up with the Canucks. The 6’3″ winger didn’t look at all out-of-place in the NHL, which is quite the accomplishment considering he started his professional career with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL, with many Canucks fans writing him off as a prospect.

It seems likely that we’ll see more of Archibald in a Canucks jersey, as he combines the frame and physicality of a fourth-liner with surprisingly soft hands and decent vision. But mainly it’s the frame and physicality, which Archibald put to great use Tuesday night, absolutely destroying Karl Stollery of the Lake Erie Monsters¬†with one of the biggest (and cleanest) hits you will ever see.

That is what is known in the business as being sent ass over teakettle or, if you’re feeling a little more restrained, bum over boiler. It actually looks a bit like a video game hit, except Stollery didn’t bounce after hitting the ice.

It’s not often that you see a player do a 360 degree somersault after getting hit unless it’s a hipcheck, but this is a shoulder-to-shoulder hit that sends Stollery tumbling.

The Comets even saw fit to make their own GIF of the hit and send it in to Deadspin, because they knew more people needed to see Darren “Destroyer of Worlds” Archibald truck a guy.

Yeah, that’s fantastic.

It should be noted that Darren Archibald is 6’3″ and 212 lbs, while Stollery is 5’11″ and 185 lbs, which helps explain some of the devastation we’re seeing here. But still, that is one of the biggest hits of the year.

I’m a little bit confused. Why hasn’t Archibald taken Tom Sestito’s place in the lineup already? I know Tom Sestito gets made fun of a lot, and I hate to jump on that bandwagon again, but I’m still really baffled by his continual presence on the team despite the fact that he’s a clear liability on the ice on both defense and offense. I realize that Sestito is on a one-way contract and would have to clear waivers to go down, but would anybody claim him anyway? Archibald seems like he could fill that big and physical role, and could actually maybe provide some upside, or at least be trusted to play five or six minutes a night. Am I crazy?

you are not crazy and do not warrant the -1 rating. what torts sees in sestito is beyond me when there are so many other options, including archibald. cheers.

I can only imagine it’s because they rated sestito’s fist as being a harder object in training camp. My hope is one day he’ll actually hit something with it.

My favourite part about that clip is Archibald standing still for a bit in disbelief after the hit.

I have one thing to say:

Thank goodness Archibald was wearing a visor.

You know what would have been more impressive… if he actually got that little black thing that slides along the ice. From what I can tell, the guy made a nice outlet pass and took one for the team.

I’m more impressed with the hittee than the hitter on this play.

I’m sure you are mb13……and naturalmystic will soon be over to give you a thumbs up and maybe a little hug.

Next time anybody on the Monsters hears footsteps they will unload the puck, in a hurry.

These are professionals (or looking to be professionals), if they are going to get scared by footsteps, then they are in the wrong profession. I’m sure this isn’t the first time the defenseman has been hit in his career…the point is he made the play and Archibald could have caused a turnover in a dangerous part of the ice but didn’t.

The hit, the flip, the look, the gif, the blog entry etc… that’s all noise that distracts from the actual outcome of the play.

Hilarious if the title of the entry was, “Best Outlet Pass EVER!” haha

I would rate Dustin Brown’s hit on Henrik Sedin in the 2012 playoffs as a better hit. When you make the captain of a team crawl to the bench in a playoff series, you’ve pretty much won the series right there – which they did.

Archibald hit a guy. Big deal. If you guys are going to get excited about a hit but a fringe player in the minors, enjoy it. Don’t cry because I put some perspective on the hit.

Torts is not playing the 4th line much…I think he wanted Archibald to get more minutes in. I think he is a good find.

But if Archibald was here, then he’d be one third of a reason to play your fourth line.

Or second line really. I thought the team was doing better when Archibald was up here although of course I would not say it was his amazingness that made it so.

Competent offensive player who hits like truck, what’s not to like really.

Correct me if I’m wrong. We have won only 1 game since sending him down.

Based on the team’s performance during the rest of the homestand, I think we just epicly failed to lose that game.
