Stick in Link: Canucks Halloween costumes; Malhotra returns to NHL

It’s time for “Stick in Link”, the feature where we just plug in a bunch of stuff written by others! Featuring a smattering of links from around the Smylosphere and beyond every Tuesday and Thursday. Warning: our links are so hyper, they change colour when exposed to heat. (Have something for us to share in the next edition? E-mail us at passittobulis@gmail.com, tweet us @passittobulis, or just come over and write your link on a pad of paper, I guess.)

• Henrik Sedin on John Tortorella’s first month as his coach: ”He’s more involved during games, with the way you play. [Vigneault] was more … [he] left the room to us a little more, let us run with it a little bit, but Torts is going to be in there after every period with how you’ve played, what you need to do better.” [ESPN]

• Manny Malhotra’s back in the NHL. After plying his trade with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, he’s been signed by their NHL affiliate, the Carolina Hurricanes. That means the Canucks will see Malhotra twice in the first 10 days of December. Awkward. [USA Today]

• Cam Charron provides a controversial opinion: the Canucks’ powerplay isn’t broken. [Canucks Army]

• Alex Ovechkin wasn’t really all that good in Vancouver, especially from the second period on. This might explain that:: he sustained an injury when Alex Edler took him down on that chance inside the first couple minutes. [NHL]

• Catching up to Bo Horvat and Hunter Shinkaruk, who have to adjust to life back in the junior ranks after tasting what it’s like at the pro level. Horvat: “It’s definitely a little different after being on the plane with the Canucks and going back to those long bus trips now. But it’s something you’ve got to do.” [Canadian Press]

• What should the Canucks be for Halloween? The Sedin twins should totally go as the Twins twins. [Canucks Hockey Blog]

• Where do the Bures and the Sedins rank among hockey’s greatest brothers? Good stuff here. [Bure's Triple Deke]

• Jordan Bowman looks at Pavel Bure’s contentious departure. [Legion of Blog]

• Can Ryan Kesler and the twins keep playing these heavy minutes? Glenn Kuper thinks not. [The Hockey Writers]

• Tony Gallagher does that thing he does. I enjoyed this line: “The coaching staff’s ongoing obsession with keeping Dan Hamhuis on the left point instead of a potential 50-point defenceman in Alex Edler is a mystery to almost everyone watching the first unit sputter like a generator which has been dredged up from an underwater cave.” [The Province]

• How are the Canucks doing in the media’s various power rankings? [Nucks Misconduct]

• And finally, enjoy this very cool timeline of Pavel Bure’s career. [Vancouver Sun]

“As the video shows, Edler purposely trips Ovechkin, denying him a scoring chance. Since Ovechkin was injured on the play, and Edler is a multiple repeat offender, the department of player safety has suspended Alex Edler for twenty-five games.”

The Bure’s triple deke blog is wrong about the Bure’s being best. He forgot there were three Stasny brothers playing for the Nordiques. He forgot Marian Stasny. Take all three brothers and their goal totals exceed Pavel and Valeri’s. The Bure’s combined for 93 goals in a season, the Stasny’s had 115 in 82-83. Adding Marian to the list at Bure’s Triple Deke puts the Stasny brothers second of all time behind Wayne and Brent Gretzky.

Fair point. You could argue that they have the record for two brothers, but for brothers in general, you’re right.
