Watch ‘Fix You’, the amazing Roberto Luongo tribute that almost went to waste [VIDEO]

Way, way back in January, we shared a Roberto Luongo tribute video titled “One Love”. We asked if it was the saddest, most moving Roberto Luongo tribute video ever. At the time, it may have been, although there were two other pretty legitimate candidates in “Apologies” and “Live Forever” (both of which are embedded in the post above).

It was around that time that we got a message from Samir Javer, one of the best Canuck fan video makers around. He told us he was working on a Luongo video that would top all three of them, and that he would push it when Luongo was finally, inevitably traded.

And then on Sunday, Cory Schneider was traded instead.

Unwilling to let his hard work go to waste, Javer reworked his piece slightly, making it less of a tribute to Luongo’s time in Vancouver come to an end and more of a tribute to Luongo in general. Tuesday night, he finally published it. Do yourself a favour and watch it right now.

I can’t believe we almost didn’t see this. It’s incredible.

Granted, at this point, it isn’t Luongo that needs fixing. It’s the relationship between him and the team.

Lyrically, “Apologies” probably sums up the situation more appropriately, what with what’s-his-nose from OneRepublic crooning It’s too late to apologiiiiiize all over the place. That sounds about right, all things considered.

Still, “Fix You” is an excellently constructed tribtue — one of the best I’ve seen — and a brilliant reminder of why I’ll be just fine if Roberto Luongo is back in net for the Canucks this fall. He’s pretty good.

The best thing this town can do it give him a standing O the first time he hits the ice.

Roberto was looking for a fresh start and to be closer to his family, so this sucks for him.

On the other hand, he’s an undisputed number one in a town that already has his picture on a gigantic poster outside of the area.

The emergence of Funny Bob over the last year or so may have been because he felt that he had a foot out of the door, but I can see from blog comments that people are really responding to him as a person.

I think that when all of these factors are combined, the goalie graveyard is actually a place of goalie resurrection. Expectations have not been lower for the Canucks in years… I actually feel excited and motivated to follow this suddenly beleagured team and can only imagine/hope that they feel the same way – taking the negativity and resolving to shove it up every team they encounter.

Geez, thanks for making me cry at work. Even though I’m going to miss Cory with all my heart I hope Lu comes back and has a phenomenal year. One of the reasons I became a Canuck fan 3 years ago was being in the arena and hearing everyone “LUUUUUUU!”.

The love for Lu was never lost for most of his fans, despite the awkwardness of the Lu/Schneids situation. This just confirms it.

    Damn that’s a good video.

Nice to see that all the highlights aren’t just from five or ten years ago but recent ones too. For all the armchair experts going on about how he’s washed up and on the decline, he’s still an elite goalie and it’s great to see the reminder.

All of the hand-wringing and intense negativity (including on blog sites like this — Tom 1040 I’m talking to you) makes me actually feel more favorable towards American fans. Generally I hate their smug homer mentality (especially in places like Boston and Chicago) but damn, sometimes it’s nice just to be 100% behind your team instead of picking, picking, picking at all their flaws. It’s not our money, it’s not our expertise, it’s just the sports team we follow. We’re competitive year after year and entertaining (for the most part) to boot.

The fall is too far away. Looking forward to seeing them back on the ice.

He is the best goalie in the franchise’s history. I am proud to have him play for us,, and I do hope he will continue to be the integral part of this team
