Introducing the Unreal Canucks GIF Tournament, a quest to determine which Canucks GIF is the greatest in existence. We’ve narrowed it down to 32 candidates, divided into four divisions then seeded, one through eight. Now we need your help. An important note: this isn’t just something to do while the players and the owners waste time bickering over who should get what’s left of the money they’re burning — it’s also a super-important initiative. After all, if we don’t do this, how else will we know? AND WE MUST KNOW.
UNREAL CANUCKS GIF TOURNAMENT — FINAL
***
(1) We call this gif JARKKO RUUTU, HUGE JERK.

This gif has burned through the tournament, dispatching what we thought were worthy opponents about as easily as Ruutu dispatches with Phaneuf. Even in the semifinal, it took nearly 80% of the vote. It’s not hard to see why people love it. It’s the sort of tiny, hilarious moment that gifs were made for — the sort of thing that happens so rarely, that when it does, you want to see it on a loop until the end of time. It really is almost perfect, from the way Phaneuf tosses his gloves down authoritatively, thinking himself intimidating, to the immediate turn — which is also an actual turn – when Ruutu tugs his legs out from under him like he’s de-tableclothing a banquet table and hops off the ice. A great gif.
(1) We call this gif SEDINS IN SYNC.

When we began this tournament, this was the first gif that came to mind, simply because, like the Ruutu gif its up against, this is the best possible medium for it. The Sedins have always been not just identical but creepily identical — why, just yesterday, we featured a photo that in which they were unsettlingly similar — but nothing drives home the point quite like this loop, where they hydrate and adjust their equipment in the exact same way at the exact same time. You couldn’t do it this harmoniously if you practiced it. This gif is evidence that the Sedins aren’t twins. They’re clones, and somewhere, there’s a laboratory with 12 more of them, all drinking and putting their gloves back on in time with this gif.

OKAY. Now let’s vote.

January 11, 2013Looks like someone is!

January 12, 2013I think the infinite sedine’s kept voting and voting to win.

January 11, 2013This is so, so hard. Both are awesome! Decided on the jerk because, well it is just so jerky! I mean in everyone hates us anyway, why not promote it!
Rob Robertson
January 11, 2013The Ruutu GIF transcends the sport and Canucks Fandom in general. I can show that to literally anyone and they’d say “wow that guy is a huge jerk! Also that was really funny!”.
Whereas I don’t think the Sedin GIF would draw nearly the same reaction.
Nee
January 11, 2013You make a compelling point….but I voted for the Sedin gif anyways. I find it mesmerizing.

January 11, 2013Hard choice but going to have to go with Ruutu. On a side note my new favourite supporting cast in the gif is Henrik. His subtle pan from watching the play, to see Phaneuf land on his backside, to giving his (approving) glace to Ruutu is just Sedin-like-subtly awesome.

January 11, 2013My favorite two, so hard to decide. Gotta go with Ruutu though. I really could watch that all day!

January 11, 2013While I acknowledge that the Ruutu gif touches on some deep-seated longings of Canucks fans in particular, and hockey fans in general (that is: to see Phaneuf fall on his bum like a clown), I must remind my fellow constituents that this is a *gif* tourney, not a *satisfying hockey/comedy moment* tourney. The Sedin gif is not only creepyawesome as all shit, it is also a mastery of the gif format. The circularity is divine, the synchronicity surreal.
Thus, my vote(s) go to the Clones, over the clowns….(though I must say that watching the Ruutu gif over and over really makes me miss that cheeky bastard..)

January 11, 2013I love that Sedin gif. The synchronicity is sublime, the pacing magnificent, and the payoff entrancing. It truly is a monument to the medium.
But the other one has Phaneuf falling on his ass.
Sorry, but I have to go with the one that always makes me giggle. I’ve had a shit-ass morning, and seeing that gif for what must be the 800th time STILL made me burst out laughing.
Ah, Ruutu. Don’t ever change. And, uh, same to you, Phaneuf.

January 11, 2013I like that the comments on here almost read like stump speeches. Well thought out opinions on such a niche topic. You Bulies are awesome.
Rituro
January 11, 2013Voted Ruutu/Phaneuf. When you have a comedic come-uppance moment that ranks among the brightest moments of *anything* of that era, you don’t pass it over for synchronized drinking.

January 11, 2013When this started, my question was, “why bother? We all know that GIF with Ruutu clowining Phaneuf will win”. And here we are.
I consider myself vindicated.
Kenji
January 11, 2013I can’t believe the Sedin one is losing. While Jarkko was a memorable and interesting guy (Europe’s dirtiest player, yet an Olympian and captain of Helsinki), and this shows him doing something Jarkkoian, you could see cheap shots from any hockey player. What you will not generally see is identical twins being absurdly identical…the comedy in it… what I am trying to say is, this is not an opinion. It is factual. It is.

January 11, 2013This was the hardest one to vote for yet. Ruutu took it though. Can’t beat something that classy.

January 11, 2013According to Ms Jenny Wren,
“Lappy’s ‘Woo’ is Taoist Zen -
Labyrinthian like a simple koan,
A gif perfectly protozoan,
A unicellular event,
Pushing the mind to its extent,
A thing so very non complex,
It will forevermore perplex.
“And all the rest mere videos are,
Admittedly a bit bizarre,
But each too much to be a gif,
A self repeating hieroglyph.
Because each one a story tells,
At bottom line my soul rebels.
So of the gifs which one is best?
It’s Lappy’s ‘Woo’ beats all the rest!
“I see this gif most each new day,
But still its charm ne’er goes away.
The rest I’ve seen five times or less,
And now they bore I must confess.
Each tells a tale that’s once it’s spun
Needs not retold because it’s done.
But the delight in Lappy’s ‘Woo’
Brings love to life and joy anew!”

January 12, 2013I am gobsmacked.

January 12, 2013I’m not. Someone pumped the Sedin votes up this round, apparently with this poll structure you can vote as often as you want.

January 12, 2013Jeepers, someone taking things a little too seriously, methinks.
Canucklehead_in_T.O.
January 12, 2013We wouldn’t be Canucks fans if we weren’t taking inconsequential things a little too seriously. It is our calling in life.

January 12, 2013HOW DID RUUTU NOT WIN? AND HOW WAS I NOT INFORMED OF THE INFINITE AMOUNT OF VOTES AT MY DISPOSAL?
Rituro
January 12, 2013Holy frak, by a sizable margin, too. I thought Ruutu had this sewn up! Where did the late surge come from?
