Introducing the Unreal Canucks GIF Tournament, a quest to determine which Canucks GIF is the greatest in existence. We’ve narrowed it down to 32 candidates, divided into four divisions then seeded, one through eight. Now we need your help. An important note: this isn’t just something to do while the players and the owners waste time bickering over who should get what’s left of the money they’re burning — it’s also a super-important initiative. After all, if we don’t do this, how else will we know? AND WE MUST KNOW.
UNREAL CANUCKS GIF TOURNAMENT — FINAL, BIEKSA DIVISION

(1) We call this gif JARKKO RUUTU, HUGE JERK.

Jarkko Ruutu’s finest moment as a Canuck has burned through this tournament with two easy wins, although we shouldn’t be surprised. It’s a beautiful gif. From the way Phaneuf swivels and drops the gloves in one fluid motion to the way Ruutu tugs his legs out and turns to the bench, and it all happens in less than a second, you’d think it was a choreographed, old-time comedy routine.
(2) We call this gif DHALSIM PUNCH.

There’s so much going on in this gif. Yes, the glove-throw is as the heart of it, but that’s hardly it. There’s also the referee, who points at the glove as it sails across the ice, then tosses Bieksa from the game, as though Bieksa needs an explanation for why he’s gone. I’m also partial to Jannik Hansen’s head turn, as the Canucks winger looks to the bench, then spots the flying glove and fixes his gaze upon it as it bounces off Hamhuis’s shoulder, then settles in the corner. It’s like he’s a cat.

January 2, 2013The Ruutu gif is prety good, but I’ve seen it so many times I don’t really find it all that amusing anymore. Bieksa throwing his glove like a 5 year old still makes me chuckle.

January 2, 2013I hate to go after the production rather than the content but the Ruutu gif’s lasting hilarity depends partly on his casually getting back on the bench as if casually finishing his shift. This gif doesn’t include that moment and thus loses some of it’s hilarity. It’s still a contender but that keeps it from being untouchable.
Speaking of comic subtlety, now that you point it out, the ref may be the comic star of the glove-throw-gif–the Buster Keaton of refs, even.

January 2, 2013From this point on there’s no contest
For of them all Ruutu’s is best
So much better than all the rest
Lord of the dance and pommel horse
Only a few will e’er endorse
Ryan Kesler fans of course
As for the gifs with Bobby Lu
One must think them weaker too
So to them both we’ll bid adieu
Leaving the twins almost in sync
Which could upset Phaneuf I think
And duly drive Jen Wren to drink

January 2, 2013I remember Bieksa saying at the time that he wasn’t sure if he should throw his glove, but right when he released, he knew it was the right thing to do. Who could vote against that?
Also, the little kick Bieksa does when he throws the glove – it’s too funny.

January 2, 2013Everyone makes good points about the Bieksa glove toss, but…
Phaneuf.
Sorry. I have to vote with my heart here. I could watch Ruutu trip that big schmoe all day long.

January 2, 2013Its sad that the best two gifs in the contest have to meet this early.

January 2, 2013The Ruutu one was and still is one of the greatest moments in franchise history. I will vote for it against all comers until it’s competing against a gif of a Canuck raising the cup.
