Introducing the Unreal Canucks GIF Tournament, a quest to determine which Canucks GIF is the greatest in existence. We’ve narrowed it down to 32 candidates, divided into four divisions then seeded, one through eight. Now we need your help. An important note: this isn’t just something to do while the players and the owners waste time bickering over who should get what’s left of the money they’re burning — it’s also a super-important initiative. After all, if we don’t do this, how else will we know? AND WE MUST KNOW.

In the first round, this Roberto Luongo gif soundly trounced a gif of Cory Schneider making a weird face. It was almost unfair to Schneider. After all, he was entered in a gif tournament, where it’s usually just the sight of some silly motion on an endless loop that gets you through. But going up against the Luongo hair toss suddenly turned things into a beauty pageant, and when you’re making a weird face and the other guy is gently tossing aside a dark curl and smacking his lips, well, say goodbye to Miss Universe.

Ironically, this round, Luongo goes up against a gif of himself making a weird face. Will it be his downfall? This gif has already upended true beauty once, managing to eke out a 73-vote win over Dan Hamhuis’s glorious hipcheck of Douglas Murray in the first round. Granted, I suspect it got a boost from my bombastic write-up, which several people said inspired them to vote for this gif. It’s a proud moment, to be certain, but if this were a serious tournament, I’d have to step down from my post for unduly influencing the decision. Thankfully, it isn’t. This gif is awesome, and don’t forget to notice the moment the guy at the back realizes Luongo has purposed to kill, retreats into the shadows, then tries to hide his face with his own recorder.

December 13, 2012The loser of this should be entered in a best-of-the-losers tournament. If I had the technical wherewithal, I’d trick the poll and vote twice, once for each, thus negating my vote and thus satisfying my duty to vote without betraying my love for both gifs.

December 13, 2012I’ve been thinking about this. We might have to have some sort of repechage or a runners-up vote. There were also a number of gifs that didn’t make the original 32-gif cut that I still quite like, so we might bring a few of those in as well.
