The award for best post-election tweet of all-time goes to Roberto Luongo

Immediately after Tuesday night’s election was called in Barack Obama’s favour (actually, four minutes before, but who’s arguing), his Twitter account sent out a victory tweet. “Four more years”, it said, along with a photo of the President hugging his wife, Michelle. In just 22 minutes, it had been shared over 200,000 times, making it the most retweeted tweet in history. Three days later, it’s been retweeted an astounding 800,000 times. People seemed pretty into it.

That said, if you’re asking me, the tweet most deserving of an RT in the wake of Obama’s re-election win was this one, from our old pal @strombone1, a.k.a. totally Roberto Luongo:

Let’s not waste time quibbling over whether or not it’s him. It’s him. It’s been confirmed 1000 ways from Sunday and he’s not even trying to hide it anymore. Here he is responding to a jab from that moron @HockeyyInsiderr (whose avatar Luongo is mocking beautifully with his own right now):

The Thomas tweet — unless “TT” was meant to stand for Tiny Thompson, but I don’t think he ever had Facebook — was perfect too. And, after NESN, CBS Boston, and picked it up, we can observe that it was also refreshingly well-received in the Boston media, unlike that one other notorious time Luongo tried to make a joke at Thomas’s expense.

As you’ll recall, Luongo was public enemy number one in Boston during the Stanley Cup Final, most notably when he made the tire-pumping joke that many in the media made the conscious choice to take literally so they could further the false narrative that the Canucks were a bunch of whiners.

Fortunately for Luongo, the new narrative — after Thomas skipped a ceremonial White House visit, embraced the homophobic sandwich, and decided to take a year off to work on the four F’s of friends, family, faith and pre-apocalyptic food-hoarding — is that Tim Thomas is a big jerk. Thus, this time, the Boston media were magically able to see the humour in Luongo’s humour. Here’s CBS Boston, marvelling at how funny he is:

The account, which has a 99.99999 percent chance of belonging to the Canucks netminder, was originally created in mystery but has since become all but verified as Luongo. He often makes wisecracks and shows a sense of humor rarely found in pro athletes, and he used the account to make a joke at the expense of Tim Thomas.

…  Thomas hasn’t been heard from in months since he announced on that same Facebook page that he’d be taking a year off from hockey, but if ever there was a time for ol’ Timmy to hop back on Facebook and give us a post, now would be it.

Of course, not everyone found it hilarious and Luongo took plenty of heat. As an example, in a post titled “Roberto Luongo Can’t Help But be a Douchebag“, the creepy blog Boston Blood Sox defended their own:

For full disclosure, nobody is 100% certain who runs the Twitter account @stromebone1. It is widely believed to be Roberto Luongo, but it’s not verified.

In any case, Tim Thomas was a good goalie, Roberto Luongo is an overrated, washed up, choker. Tim Thomas did his best when it mattered most. For Luongo, the more the game mattered, the worse he played.

Even if @strombone1 is just a Luongo fan, he’s seriously misguided.

Thomas has a few things in his impenetrable subterranean bunker that Luongo doesn’t have. A Conn Smythe, for instance. As well as a Stanley Cup ring.

But even this touchy, kneejerk Bruins fan post couldn’t keep up the Thomas defence right to the end:

Although Timmy has probably melted his ring in order to make bullets.

Luongo also faced faced his fair share of angry Bostonian tweeters, but he’s clearly gotten a lot better at handling hatred from Boston:

Never change, Luongo.

Luongo may not be our goalie the next time NHL hockey is played, but I’ll be damned if he’s not one of the best follows on Twitter.

Believe it or not, Luongo may just be the smartest man on the planet. He has crafted a Twitter account in which he can say almost anything he wants, and there is no way anybody can hold him accountable for any of it! As long as he never tells, he will be the best NHL player to follow on twitter, neck and neck with Biz.

Strombone rules the twitter-verse for athletes. Hands down.

Biz-looser is sexist, rude, and an arrogant child. He talks about women like we’re shirts to sort through every morning. I have zero respect for him and no longer follow him. Strombone is a great follow.

Actually, the best post-election tweet was Alec Baldwin – “You know your party’s in trouble when someone wants to know if the rape guy won, and you have to ask, ‘which one?’”

And we forgot to give Luongo a CELEBRATION 25 Medallion last January while giving away his hockey goalie stick.Maybe it’s not too late yet for somebody to do so.

You love Luongo’s tweets now, but when you absolutely need a laugh, he’ll let you down and you’ll start following the Twitter account of some kid from Boston College.
