The PITB Twitter 50: a starter pack of Canucks follows

Earlier this week, Sports Illustrated released their second annual Twitter 100, a countdown of the 100 most essential Twitter accounts in sports. Shortly thereafter, Deadspin released a rebuttal, a list of the 67 worst. With Twitter lists on our mind, we thought it might be worth creating something similar for Canucks fans. This is that: the Pass it to Bulis Twitter 50.

Now, this list — juried by myself, Daniel, and an anonymous third party who is to blame for any omission or selection that offends you — provides 50 accounts worth a follow if you’re a Canucks fan on Twitter: beat guys, radio stations, fans, bloggers and players. But, of course, the Canucks community is much larger than just 50 accounts, which is why we’ve avoided naming this “The Essential 50″ or “50 must-follows” or some such other nonsense that suggests you’re doing it wrong if you’re not following these accounts, or that other accounts are somehow not as good.

It’s for that same reason that they’re presented in no particular order. These are just 50 accounts we think Canuck fans will benefit from following. Effectively, think of the PITB Twitter 50 as a starter pack.

***

1 | Vancouver Canucks – The Vancouver Canucks official twitter account is as essential as it gets, livetweeting games, interacting with fans, and posting exclusive pictures, video, and contests.

2 | Kevin Bieksa – After months of campaigning, Twitter finally got Juice; the wait was well worth it, as Bieksa is a funny guy, particularly when he’s making fun of Kesler or Burrows.

3 | Ryan Kesler – While his account was originally used just to shill his clothing line, his account got significantly more personal and funny while he was recovering from surgery last year.

4 | David Booth – Do you like hunting? Do you love Jesus? Do you like occasional train wrecks?

5 | Brendan Gaunce – The Canucks’ latest 1st round draft pick and newly-appointed captain of the Belleville Bulls loves hockey, Taylor Swift, and Pokemon, not necessarily in that order.

6 | Eddie Lack – Goaltending prospect and short-shorts aficionado, Lack is interactive, silly, and occasionally posts topless pictures of himself.

7 | Probably Roberto Luongo – Self-deprecating and hilarious, @strombone1 isn’t just an essential Canucks follow, but an essential life follow.

8 | Not Roberto Luongo – Arguably the best hockey player parody account on Twitter, mainly because the real Roberto Luongo interacts with him all the time. He’s a Blackhawks fan, but somehow that doesn’t matter.

9 | Dan Murphy – Sportsnet reporter and host who frequently breaks Canucks-related news.

10 | Jason Botchford – Beat reporter for the Vancouver Province, who is one of the most well-connected writers in the city. Very interactive.

11 | Elliott Pap – Beat reporter for the Vancouver Sun and the go-to source for Canucks-centric cynicism.

12 | Brad Ziemer – Beat reporter for the Vancouver Sun, who also occasionally covers golf.

13 | Gord McIntyre – Beat reporter for the Province covering a wide-range of sports.

14 | Iain MacIntyre – Not to be confused with Gord, columnist for the Vancouver Sun.

15 | Cam Cole – Vancouver Sun columnist, one of the best sports writers in the business, and an all-around great guy.

16 | Jim Jamieson – Beat reporter for the Province with plenty of inside info.

17 | Hosea Cheung – Sports writer for 24 Hours Vancouver who works harder than you do.

18 | Guts McTavish – Sports columnist and puppet for 24 Hours Vancouver who frequently starts the most popular Canucks hashtags.

19 | Ben Kuzma – Sports writer for the Province, who also makes frequent appearances on the Team 1040 and covers the Canucks for The Hockey News.

20 | Kevin Woodley – Covers the Canucks for NHL.com and has particular insight into goaltending.

21 | Matt Sekeres – Team 1040 host and discussion starter. Known to say “What say you?”

22 | Blake Price – Team 1040 host and discussion continuer, in that he’s quite interactive.

23 | Jeff Paterson – Reporter and post-game contributor for Team 1040, as well as writing for various other outlets.

24 | Team 1040 – The official account for the radio home of the Vancouver Canucks. Essential for knowing when your favourite player will be on the air.

25 | News 1130 Sports – The sports account for the News 1130 radio. Often first on Canucks’ transactions.

26 | Katie Maximick - Sports reporter for the Alaska-Highway News and former Canucks blogger. Occasionally cantankerous. Backstreet Boys fan.

27 | Jeff Angus – Blogger at Canucks Army, Angus Certified, and Dobber Hockey. Personal trainer to the stars (and also normal people).

28 | Wyatt Arndt – Blogger at the Province’s Legion of Blog. Maker of fine gifs.

29 | Jordan Bowman – Blogger at the Province’s Legion of Blog. Always camera ready. Coiner of the term, “Trevor Linden good.”

30 | Thomas Drance – Editor of Canucks Army. Egghead. Smoker. Mason Raymond apologist.

31 | Cam Davie – Blogger for Canucks Army. Fellow Maple Ridgian. The nicest guy in Canucks fandom.

32 | Clay Imoo – The second-nicest guy. Blogger at Canucks Hockey Blog, youth pastor, musical prodigy.

33 | Chris Golden - Blogger at Canucks Hockey Blog, longtime interactive fan. Followed by the official Canucks account; I don’t think they realize it.

34 | Cam Charron – Egghead supreme. Advanced stats booster. Take away his graph paper and he’ll flip right out.

35 | Nucks Misconduct – Popular SB Nation Canucks blog.

36 | Canucks Hockey Blog - Canucks blog that’s been around just forever.

37 | Canucks Army – Canucks blog at the Nations Network. Cynical, stat-based, home of chance data. Seriously, these guys watch the game with protractors in hand.

38 | Head to the Net – Canucks blog. Dubious of advanced stats.

39 | Dmitri Filipovic – Creator of So You’re an Expert, blogger at Canucks Army, star podcaster.

40 | Smug Nation - Canucks blog on the way up. Home to photoshops and silliness.

41 | Tyson Giuriato – Quality source for Canucks prospect information.

42 | Marda Miller - Interactive Canucks fan, longtime Alex Burrows fangirl, occasional blogger at Canucks Army.

43 | Gay Canuck – Interactive Canucks fan, blogger at Puck Buddys, top-notch photoshopper.

44 | Taj – Extremely interactive Canucks fan, uncanny ability to ask the right questions and get new information out of hockey personalities on Twitter.

45 | Alix Wright – Interactive Canucks fan, occasional hilarious blogger, has an angry giraffe for an avatar.

46 | Beantown Canuck – Extremely interactive Canucks fan from Boston. We assume. Occasionally blogs at Nucks Misconduct.

47 | Ian - Extremely interactive Canucks fan. Maybe the most interactive Canucks fan. Aggressive re-tweeter and humour-monger.

48 | Grainne – Interactive Canucks fan, gateway to the terrifying underworld of Canuck fans on Tumblr.

49 | Schneider’s Teeth – Extremely interactive Canucks fan, grammar nazi.

50 | Pass it to Bulis – Two studs.

so, I have to ask. Were you intentionally making Pap look silly?

Pap tweets… “…Canucks core isn’t getting any younger…. Isn’t this what happened to Flames?”

    Followed by GMac’s…
“Gillis can see Kassian as a top-6 forward this year.”

    lol

Ha! No, that wasn’t intentional, and since I have to see Elliott every day, we’re gonna put Brad Ziemer in between them to settle this.

Drance’s “Fin” tweet is a classic and gives me hope that this twitter-thing may have some value afterall.

Great list, but man – Strombone should be #1. Guy is gold. I laugh my butt off almost every tweet.

Kesler has the worst account. Ever.

@VanCanucks doesn’t live tweet games, @canucksgame does. I suppose they’re technically both the same account, but have to be followed separately.
I like the list! I’ve even followed some of the ones I wasn’t previously following.

    Thanks!

@VanCanucks actually does do live game tweets, they’re just not as frequent/verbose as the @CanucksGame one. But they tweet when there’s a goal or at the end of periods.

Good list. There were actually some super obvious ones I realized I wasn’t following. This is a good starter kit for any Canucks fan thinking about joining Twitter.

My how-to on Canucks fandom on Twitter:

Step 1 – Create an account that either has something explicitly about Vancouver sports in the handle, or mention the Canucks in your profile.

Step 2 – Find a list of Canucks fans and follow a bunch of them. When they see that your profile includes a vague reference to Canucks and/or hockey, you’ll get a follow-back.

Step 3 – Follow the accounts listed here. Beware of most player accounts because players hardly ever tweet, and when they do they’ll be retweeted a million times by the fans from Step 2.

Now you’re a part of one of the most active sports communities on Twitter, congratulations!

    @HumanCannonball on Twitter

(Optional Step 4 – Shamelessly promote your Twitter handle in the comments at Pass It To Bulis)

Tony Gallagher is probably one of the most prominent (if frustrating) columnists in Vancouver. But an essential follow even if he doesn’t tweet a whole bunch
