Spitballin’ on Luongo’s return, Malhotra’s kicks, and shinny shindig

Spitballin’ (or Super Pass ITBulis: All In, if you love adventurous acronymizing) is a feature that allows us to touch on a multitude of things really fast, because in the world of hockey, there are always lots of things to find and colour. Here are a few quick topics.

Luongo returning to Vancouver, still a Canuck

Despite really, really wanting to play in Florida and training there and everything, Luongo just can’t get out of Vancouver. I’m speaking figuratively, but it will soon be literal, as Luongo is reportedly returning to Vancouver next week. You shouldn’t read too much into that, just as no one should have read anything into Luongo training in Florida, as all the Canucks have been asked to return to the city for the Jake Milford charity golf tournament.

“Roberto Luongo is still a member of this organization,” Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said Thursday. “And like all our players, he has been asked to support this charity golf tournament. Attendance is not mandatory, but I’m proud to say that nearly all our players have accepted our invitation.”

As Gilman says, Luongo is still a Canuck, and it doesn’t look like that will be changing any time soon. Cam Charron runs down the evidence over at Backhand Shelf, including Jason Botchford’s assertion that Florida’s offer “blows.” With Gillis indicating that he’s in no hurry to make a deal and the rest of the league saying, “That’s fine by us,” Luongo could be on the Canucks for far longer than expected.

As Luongo himself (allegedly) said, “Get your popcorn ready! Gonna be lots of fun!”

Wait, Luongo used to have a Pink Panther mask?

Luongo’s masks with the Canucks have generally been fairly boring and staid. His Johnny Canuck mask notwithstanding, Luongo tends towards plain designs in appropriate colours. Apparently, that wasn’t always the case. Back when he was with the Florida Panthers, Luongo wore a mask featuring the coolest cat of all, who happens to be a colour that doesn’t go with the Florida jersey in any way whatsoever.

Seriously, though, that’s fantastic. I sincerely hope that Luongo skated onto the ice to this song.

Full 3-on-3 scrimmage from Thursday’s practice at UBC

Are you so hard up for Canucks hockey that you’re willing to watch some members of the team play a 3-on-3 game of shinny? Of course you are. About a dozen Canucks players and prospects, as well as a few others, held a practice at UBC on Thursday, culminating in a 3-on-3 scrimmage.

YouTube user ThatsOffside1 was on hand to capture the entire game as well as other parts of the practice. The scrimmage featured Kevin Bieksa, Alex Edler, Zack Kassian, Max Lapierre, Manny Malhotra, Kevin Connauton and Eddie Lack on Team Blue. Team Green was composed of Jordan Schroeder, Jason Garrison, Dale Weise, Aaron Volpatti, Kellan Tochkin, and Martin Jones, a goaltending prospect for the LA Kings who has spent a couple seasons in the AHL.

I have to commend ThatsOffside1 for his camera work. It’s remarkably steady throughout. Check out the 7:50 mark for a very nice goal scored by Tochkin (I think). Team Green won the day 3-1.

Manny Malhotra works out with Whitecaps FC, dominates

Considering one of his brothers-in-law is a part-owner of the Whitecaps and his other brother-in-law was one of the stars of the team prior to their MLS days, it was likely pretty easy for Manny Malhotra to talk his way into Whitecaps’ practice.

@VanCanucks was on hand to tweet the highlights of Malhotra’s time on the pitch, where he was evidently quite impressive. A camera crew was also there and it looks like you can expect a CanucksTV video on Malhotra’s experience quite soon.

Chloe Ezra’s adorable background

As both long-time and short-time Bulies are well-aware, we’re big fans of Chloe Ezra, whose Pass it to Comics series for PITB is one of our most popular features. The new background for her Tumblr is absolutely adorable, featuring tiny members of the Canucks and various indulgent foodstuffs.

That’s amazing. My favourite details have to be Bieksa throwing Jello at Kesler (reminiscent of when he threw a glove), Luongo and Schneider sharing a massive tub of poutine, and Burrows, unsurprisingly, diving for a slice of cake.

I immediately tiled this as my new desktop background. I recommend you do the same.

Because I somehow mistook him for Alex Edler. Sheesh. Obviously Edler is the one taking a nap on the cheesecake. I’m dumb.

Are there guys in blue and green jerseys with a puck on a rink?? Then, yes, of course I want to watch it!! (I feel like a crack addict.) Also Chloe does it again – I love her stuff!

We all know he’s long gone, but would it have killed you to sneak our boy Wellwood in there somewhere towards the back?

Are you referring to the wallpaper with the food? It does somehow seem appropriate…

Great wallpaper, though I don’t think that Luongo, being a Montrealer, would stand for curd-less poutine. Just saying.

I can report that Luongo was on the ice many times when that song was played though he didn’t enter the ice to the song. It was played after a great save by Lou when time allowed. I saw and heard this first hand many times. It was always my favorite mask of his.

Outstanding art by Chloe again. She has to be one of my most favourite artists of all time. Super adorable and whimsical but I love the attention to detail and thought that goes into each effort she puts out as well.

Have to disagree with Luongo’s masks being boring though. They may not be overly complex; but I like that as an aesthetic and how he’s tried to incorporate the retro look in that manner. I think they look pretty cool.
