Reports and rumours: really, what’s the difference?

After the NHL Draft came and went without a Roberto Luongo trade, the waters were temporarily calm on that front. Then came Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch to create some waves Monday morning by claiming that Luongo had invoked his No Trade Clause to avoid being traded to the Blackhawks or the Leafs and that his preferred location was a return to the Florida Panthers.

Needles to say, this caused what is known in technical terms as a kerfuffle.

Numerous news outlets picked up the story, with the most sensationalist of the bunch being the Toronto Sun, who ran the headline “Luongo rejects trade to the Leafs: Report.” The waves gradually turned into a full-blown squall until finally Bob McKenzie walked out across the water, spoke a word, and calmed the storm. Evidently, Luongo hadn’t rejected a trade to the Leafs, as the Toronto Sun so erroneously claimed, because a trade to the Leafs hadn’t even gotten to that stage of negotiations.

While most didn’t go as far as the Toronto Sun, the majority of articles did use the word “report” frequently, which got me thinking: what’s the difference between a report and a rumour?

At this time of the year, not much. I don’t begrudge Portzline sharing what he heard from a source he trusted, as that’s part of his job as a reporter, but this situation should make you think about how quickly you believe what you hear. Until a trade has actually been made, a “report” is essentially a rumour from a member of the media. These types of rumours may be more trustworthy than the rumours spawned by xXxSchneiderFan347xXx (who totally heard from a friend who works with Luongo’s ex-teammate from junior that he’s going to the KHL), but they’re also not necessarily factual.

First there’s the issue that it really doesn’t make any sense: if Luongo is so keen to get out of Vancouver as everyone else is “reporting,” then why would he veto trades to these two teams? In addition, it contradicts previous “reports” that Toronto was on Luongo’s list of acceptable teams.

Another thing to consider is what is actually being reported and what kernel of truth is behind it. It’s entirely possible that Luongo’s preferred destination is Florida, but the original tweet from Portzline doesn’t actually say that Luongo exercised his No Trade Clause to stop a trade that was essentially a done deal, just that he hasn’t yet waived it. This is true: Luongo hasn’t waived his No Trade Clause to go to Toronto or Chicago. He hasn’t waived it to go to Los Angeles either.

Essentially, take any report or rumour, no matter the source, with a grain of salt at this time of year. As one of our followers, @DJSkead, pointed out, it’s probably time to stock up on salt. There’s going to be a lot of misinformation out there until a deal is actually done.

So what does @strombone1, Luongo’s suspected Twitter account (and friend of the blog), think about all of this?

Ah. Well what about Bob McKenzie’s quip about Luongo needing to worry about ending up with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves?

Never change, @strombone1. Never change.

Good to see Lu taking all of this in strides, if strombone1 is indeed Lu.

There’s a bit of logic that the sensationalist media and rumour mill churners are conveniently leaving out of all of this, but you nailed it right on the head Daniel. If Luongo wanted out of Vancouver so badly, he wouldn’t be so picky, and allegedly only being interested in one possible destination clearly implies very little desperation to leave town. Yes Luongo is a strong candidate to be moved, but it seems to me that a lot of the scuttlebutt is suggesting that there’s no way he’s going to be back and that Gillis must unload him (and not Schneider), perhaps in a ploy to reduce Lu’s apparent value. Unfortunately, if Luongo is actually not determined to leave town at all costs (were these rumours to be found true), then obviously Gillis still has plenty of options. Otherwise, we can deduce that a good number of possible destinations are still on the radar. KHL anyone?

If we go on the presumption that Strombone is Lu, then it’s clear that he “gets” Twitter brilliantly.

I’m going to tweet this now:

According to @passittobulis, Luongo to the KHL.

It’s right there in your article — that makes it a report.

Its getting to the point that I wonder if the original “reports” of Luongo wanting a trade are true at all. HNIC were reporting his trade request and stating that he was done in Vancouber, the day they started Schneider. Everyone seems to forgotten that Schneider failed to defeat the Kings as well.

It’s true – I can understand the speculation, but where is all the certainty coming from? it’s pretty clear that loads of the reporters are reporting “reports” rather than facts, so why pay attention to any of them? Also, is Bob McKenzie Luongo’s therapist or lawyer or something? That’s a rather eyebrow-raising amount of detail he’s go there…

I thought Luongo has a no-movement clause – does that mean he can’t be sent to the farm as that would be a move out of the the top club?

The reason I ask is because usually they are no-trade clauses but I’ve read reports the Luongo has a no trade clause and a no movement clause. Clarify?

The Toronto sun always has haters who write about the Leafs so i dont even pay attention to their stories since i am from Toronto. As for this Aaron guy he is a moron.Lu is strombone1 and has hinted he wouldn’t mind going to toronto many a times. One of the most telling is his tweet of “What would Fuhrs see do? What Grant Fuhr did was go from a western confernece team to a eastern conference team the Toronto Maple Leafs. Grant Fuhr is Lus idol. He has hinted many a times he would love to be a Leaf. Untill Gillis relaizes he aint getting Jake from us Lu aint coming here to Toronto. Gillis will get a decent return but not his crazy asking price for that stupid ridiculous contract Gillis dished out.Gillis wake up. You made Luongos worth drop when you signed his contract.Period.

akidd think . Why would Burke get Aaron to do this? does it make sense? NO Really some people need to think and actually use your brain. Lu having Florida as the only location pretty much takes Toronto off list then. If anything it was a Vancouver leak to Aaron that tricked him to believe Lu only wants florida so Burke would have to give in. Wont happen Burke will not give in for the current asking price which supposely id Jake Gardiner. Not going to happen unless its a bigger deal and we get Kesler with Lu. then you might get Jake otherwise it aint happening

I do, he’s not to be trusted. Totally agree with you regarding believing what you hear (read)… far too many people think if they see something on a webpage, it has to be true.
