Is the interview below with the man pictured above? NO ONE KNOWS.
Roberto Luongo has dominated the Canucks’ offseason discussion, both because rumours that he’s on his way out of town continue to swirl, and because he is believed to be running one of the best athlete Twitter accounts in the history of the world. @strombone1, Roberto Luongo’s super-secret suspected Twitter account, is pretty much everything you want an athlete Twitter account to be: hilarious, interactive, topical, you name it. The only thing it isn’t… is verified.
I’ve compiled my evidence for why I believe Roberto Luongo is the man behind @strombone1 at the bottom of this post and, as strange the account has gotten over the past few months, I stand by my conclusions. Heck, I’m more confident now than I was then. Jason Botchford agrees. Still, there are facts yet to be found, which is why I recently reached out to @strombone1 himself for answers.
Granted, he didn’t provide any, but we still chatted via Twitter’s direct messaging service. What follows is an exclusive interview with @strombone1, which may actually be an exclusive interview with Roberto Luongo, depending on what you believe.

Rob
June 7, 2012I keep going back and forth with this in my head. Sometimes Strombone1 tweets way too much to be Luongo, I imagine he’s pretty busy with his family, going on vacations etc. It’s hard to imagine him pecking away on his iPhone during all of it. I know its the offseason but come on!
And then a few hours later he’s chirping back and forth with Ryan Kesler’s twitter account… So maybe it IS Luongo after all.
The suspense is killing me.
Beantown Canuck
June 7, 2012@Rob – it takes barely more than minimal effort to tweet. It’s 140 characters that you can spit out anywhere at any time on your phone. If he’s enjoying it, it wouldn’t be too burdensome.
C
June 7, 2012Exactly. How is “he tweets too much” an argument that it’s not him? If these tweets were to show up during a game, yes but it’s the offseason. And can we leave the is he or isn’t he debate behind? It’s the worst kept secret and so obvious that if you’re still doubting, you haven’t been paying attention. Please let’s just enjoy it!
Kenji
June 7, 2012I used to think that Henrik was the funniest Canuck but now it is Strombone1, whoever he is because its not at all obvious.
waterboy99troop
June 7, 2012Pooping is a hobby of his? That explains that one playoff game…
Hoofaloo
June 7, 2012Woow! He actually did the interview! Not that I ever doubted you. But. This is hard hittin news, Mooney! “Strombone” is hilarious!
pooroldbear
June 7, 2012Nice interview! Great questions, funny answers. Pity he didn’t fall into your cunning trap in the icebreaker question. Or rather, as you’ve pointed out previously, it’s awesome that he didn’t.
pooroldbear
June 7, 2012PS – He unfollowed you? Ha ha – burn!
TheWellwoods
June 7, 2012Trying to bring in ringers for Road Hockey To Conquer Cancer, eh? Victory is going to be so sweet.
Harrison Mooney
June 7, 2012We’re so terrible!
Kenji
June 7, 2012How can this tourney be watched? When is it? Are there teams looking for somewhat minimally athletic middle aged blog readers?
DanD
June 7, 2012Yeah I wouldn’t mind putting my years of small college intramural floor hockey experience to work. Maybe a PITB readers’ team?
Harrison Mooney
June 7, 2012We’ll have a post up on our road hockey team in a few days and we’ll definitely be drafting Bulies.
Colin Schmidt
June 7, 2012^ Looking forward to that.
Kenji
June 7, 2012Tbe Bulies! I like that. Or: The Mooney Blues, The Wagnerian Overtures, The Past-It Comics…
I assume all the uniform numbers will be multiples of 38
Colin Schmidt
June 8, 2012@Kenji How about everybody’s jersey number is 38? Or better, we could all pick up cheap knock-off Canucks jerseys and get some cheap knock-off store to put cheap knock-off BULIS 38 on the back of them. Also, the Mooney Blues is a fantastic name for a team, but then Dan would have to go sit in a corner and cry while we play without him.

June 7, 2012If you’re in need of a classic ‘stay at home defenceman’, I’m your boy.
I’m real good at staying at home.
Donna Suico
June 7, 2012This is why PITB is my the best, and my favorite, hockey blog.
Right about now, I don’t care who @strombone1 is. He just makes this slow off-season fun and gives me something to look forward to every day. If it is Roberto Luongo on the other side of it, that’s just icing on the cake.
Thanks, Messrs. Wagner & Mooney.

June 7, 2012Isn’t his (humorous) tweet about bringing his talents to wherever Parisé signs pretty much a confirmation anyway? Or at least a failure to remain in character?
TheFalconer
June 7, 2012It’s amazing how willing he is to engage – I made a stupid joke about how I didn’t believe strombone was actually Travis Lulay yesterday and he DM’d me just to say he enjoyed the joke. Gonna miss this guy! (maybe)
Nee
June 7, 2012That’s pretty cool.
SteveB
June 7, 2012It would be such a sweet Jersey Foul to sport an @strombone1 Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.
cathylu
June 7, 2012Thanks, that made my morning! (That and the Devils winning last night! )

June 7, 2012Clever ambiguity is the best indicator of brilliance.

June 7, 2012Love love love a witty guy.
biznow
June 7, 2012A major coup for PITB indeed. Who knew that dude (?) from the glee project would land an interview with Loun..err strombone1
Stinkpickle
June 7, 2012Steve B, your jersey foul points would be immediately erased for sporting that awesome Salsa jersey!
CanucksRock88
June 7, 2012I have been following him for awhile now, and there seems to be a competition to be followed by strombone1. I hope we never know for sure…
JRC
June 7, 2012This post is the hardest I’ve tried not to laugh out loud at work in a while. Awesome job, PITB & strombuongo1!
Gabe
June 7, 2012Slow clap, gentlemen.
I don’t care who Strombone is; whither he tweets, I will follow.
Nee
June 7, 2012I’ve been a fan of Roberto for many years, but this makes me respect him even more. What a good sport. I imagine this isn’t the greatest summer he’s ever had, with the rumours floating around and big changes afoot. I like his attitude.
tkoolkat
June 8, 2012He is roberto Luongo. an insider confirmed it with me.
JRC
June 8, 2012I assume, tkoolkat, that that insider was Samir Javer (@samjam99 on Twitter)…
Tamara B
June 8, 2012Respect. This is so enviably awesome!
Ed
June 15, 2012BTW, who’s Adam Schwartz? He tweeted this recently:
“@strombone1 Luo, I’m still sitting here with JJ waiting for you to tell me what to do. Hate this hand.”
Source: http://twitter.com/PokercastAdam/status/211174190139703296
Did he put in “Luo” by mistake and revealed the identity of strombone1?
