When Don Cherry joined Twitter at the beginning of March, I must confess I was hoping for more unintentional hilarity. After all, Cherry is 78 years old, which isn’t normally a great age to try and learn how to use a new technology. Combine that with Cherry’s propensity for political incorrectness and his twitter account had the potential for awesomeness.
Unfortunately, Don Cherry’s Twitter account ended up being pretty dull, consisting largely of him pointing out when a player is doing well and linking to Coach’s Corner segments on CBC. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at how quickly he adapted to using Twitter; he adapted to the advent of techno, after all.
The one instance where Cherry managed to provide the Twitter world with a little unintentional humour came a couple weeks ago, when he weighed in on the rumour that Luongo had asked for a trade.
I wouldn’t blame Luongo if he wants out of VAN. He’s been the biggest escape goat of all time. If MacLean let’s me, I’ll have more tonight

For anyone who doesn’t get why this is funny, Wikipedia is your friend.
Don Cherry doesn’t make mistakes (other than that techno song). What Cherry clearly meant is that Luongo is the goat in Vancouver and intends to escape from the city via a trade. The fact that “escape goat” bares a superficial similarity to the far more common term “scapegoat” is a mere coincidence.
The “Escape Goat” went semi-viral, like a minor case of the sniffles, leading to my favourite Luongo-themed animated gif ever, from HFBoards poster, Penosity.

Clearly, Luongo saw this gif and, with the Kentucky Derby dominating the news, got a brilliant idea in his head:
Wanna buy a horse together @NotBobbyLu ? We could name it “escape goat” and run it in the Kentucky derby next year???

It’s time for Luongo to buy a horse and name it Escape Goat. Brilliant. Unfortunately, Luongo is about 100 pounds too heavy to be a jockey.
Once again, we at PITB sincerely hope that Luongo never officially confirms @strombone1 as his Twitter account. This is much better. The fact that he chose a parody account of himself as his straight man for his comedic stylings is the cherry on top of this delicious, delicious sundae.

May 6, 2012Strombone is either Lu and the most amazing athlete Twitter handle ever or not Lu and the most fantastic Twitter prank. Either way, lots of awesome happening here.

You really think so? This was a pretty common term years ago and even made it into the Simpsons (when Abu gets in trouble for selling Homer expired ham) so I am assuming that Don would be familiar with the term scapegoat. What gets me is the clever play on words with Luongo commonly being the “scapegoat” for Vancouver’s playoff woes and “escaping” from Vancouver. Thats why I didn’t think that he would be clever enough to think it up. Seems more like a Don Maclean pun, because he is definitely a punny guy.
