Kevin Bieksa pranks interviewer, does an entire interview pretending to be Ryan Kesler

We’ve said it time and time again this season: Kevin Bieksa is a blogger’s dream. Every single one of his interviews yields some sort of comedy gold, from animal nicknames to milk hot dogs to LMFAO references and beyond. But a recent interview he did with Mike Dunsmore of Fox Sports is the best thing he’s ever given us.

You see, for the duration of the interview, Bieksa pretends to be Ryan Kesler. Dunsmore approached Bieksa after the Canucks’ Game 4 win in Los Angeles, thinking that’s who he was. And Bieksa, recognizing the gift-wrapped prank the moment he saw it, just went with it. What follows are 2:40 of fall off your chair hilarity.

There’s so much here I don’t even know where to begin. Bieksa feeds the “Kesler hates Canada” narrative from the 2010 Olympics, claiming America “is where the real hockey fans are” and that the crowd won’t be as good as in Canada. He espouses a love for the Ohio State Buckeyes (although “the Bowling Green Falcons always kind of took it to us”). He talks about “my traffic in front of the net” on the Canucks’ powerplay. He reminisces about how he, Jonathan Quick, and Dustin Brown “had some reeaaally good times” at the Olympics.

And best of all, he tells Dunsmore his nickname is “Guzzler”. Way to think on your feet, Juice.

It’s a shame Dunsmore didn’t ask him about the ESPN body issue photo. Bieksa could have blown our minds.

The Canucks’ blueliner talked to Jason Botchford about the prank. From Wyatt Arndt of the Province’s Legion of Blog, who was the first one on this legendary tale:

“That guy’s an idiot. It’s his own fault if he can’t tell the difference between an all star centre and a plug defenceman,” explained Kevin Bieksa. “He shouldn’t even be allowed in the room.” Bieksa didn’t stop there, as he continued to rip on Dunsmore. “He doesn’t know who Ryan Kesler is. Ryan Kesler won a silver medal for them. I did a full 10 maybe 15-minute interview with him; I was telling how I grew up in Livonia.”

Simply amazing.

All told, you have to feel bad for Dunsmore. While it’s never a good idea to approach someone for an interview if you don’t know who they are (especially Kevin Bieksa, who will crush you), everybody makes mistakes, and it’s regrettable that Dunsmore’s led to him being the victim of a classic prank. He’s going to hate Bieksa for the rest of his career, not just for making him look like an idiot, but for calling him one on the record. (As an aside, I didn’t think that was particularly necessary.)

On the bright side, this is a mistake Dunsmore will probably never make again.

You wrote up about this for Puck Daddy before you did for PITB? For shame Harrison, for shame.

Actually, there’s a really good explanation for that: at the local level, I’d already been beaten to this story by Wyatt, so there was no need to put a rush on it. But I could still be the first one on it at the national level. So I went there first, then doubled back to cover it here. Such are the perils of writing for two blogs.

I know. If you do this with ANYONE else on the team, you get a simple explaination and BORING. BUt because it’s Juice, hilarity. This is why we signed him. He’s a good defenseman, but he’s a better interview and character.

I believe the the radio guy got tricked. The Canucks are one of the most hated teams anyway no matter what they do, one more “enemy” in the media won’t matter, not to mention a radio guy from FOX sports radio.

    Gold.

And now he’s trying to do damage control, that Dumsmore guy, and he just looks more idiotic. Poor thing. It must be awful to be so had, but honestly… He’s the one on radio; it’s not like he can’t have ever *seen* a Canuck. (Heck, the guy has dual citizenship, for crimey’s sake!)

Bieksa’s hilarious, but I can’t help but think this is going to just ignite the likes of the CBC commentators, who’ll find a way to twist this into a ‘classless’ move. (I really would like a moratorium on that word…)

    Meanwhile:

    Pittsburgh won
    Detroit is done
    One must admit
    Playoffs are fun

So the Preds are moving on
The Wings the first team to be gone
And what the fate of our Canucks
Will it be this Sunday sucks
Or will they make it three to two
I wish that I already knew
But I will have to watch this game
I trust like me you’ll do the same
And after we have seen them play
We’ll watch again down in LA

Perhaps we’ll have the twins to thank
As Booth scores twice from Hank and Dank
While Cory Schneider shuts them down
And Bieksa beats on Dustin Brown
Or Kesler shifts from second gear
Where he has been too long this year
And scores a goal and on a tear
He sets up one for Lapierre
Mayhap MayRay so nice and slick
Could shelf a shot past Johnny Quick

While writing in the here and now
I know it doesn’t matter how
They beat the Kings while on home ice
And then go on to beat them twice
It’s only that it has to be
They win the series four to three
And so it is I’ve this to say
The bottom line’s I want and pray
A bounce or two will go our way
Just so’s we get more goals than they

I’m with you, Jen. I had a bit of sympathy for him, too, until I did some research. He doesn’t come off as someone with a great deal of wit.

Sure, it must have been hard to be ribbed by, you know, everyone on the planet, but I read a post by one of his colleagues who advised Dunsmore to just roll with it, and thought it a wise, albeit public, suggestion. Seems Dunsmore isn’t cut out for being a public figure if he can’t ease up on the ego a bit–maybe take inspiration from someone like, say, Brian Williams, who is both respected and able to be the brunt of jokes ala 30 Rock.

This doofus who was fooled by Kevin Bieksa and is with Fox Sports Radio in LA is a Canadian from the Centre of the Hockey Universe – Toronto – so his lack of knowledge about hockey is to be expected since he is from a city without an NHL hockey team. As the Twitter account for this twit notes:
