As Canuck fan videos go, filmmaker Adam MacKay-Smith’s Johnny Canuck series is completely unparalleled. The short films, which feature a lumberjack that bears a suspicious resemblance to playoff-bearded Aaron Rome fighting his way through a lonely world in which everyone and everything is out to destroy him, are moving, captivating and visually stunning. Plus the narration is flawless.
Now comes the third film in the series, The Unfinished Fight of Johnny Canuck. In it, Johnny axes a king right between the eyes, destroys a man’s motorcycle with a stick to the spoke, and punches a bear right in his smug face. It is epic and fantastic.
There are so many fabulous little flourishes here. The “V” the planes make with their smoke trail (or is it a “W” for the return of the Winnipeg Jets?), Johnny and the bear going back-to-back in the stick-in-rink split screen, the orca hidden in the mountain at 0:12, the flying skate-themed “to be continued” — it’s all fantastic.
Seriously, if you don’t like this, you don’t like awesome things.
If you’re new to this series, you can check (and must) out the other two films right here.

April 17, 2012Uh, not for nothin’, but I think the JETS are making a W, not a V…. “old enemies, soar once more”? I’m just sayin’.
Awesome video.

April 17, 2012I never even realized that these were shot in the Whistler/Squamish mountain range until this video (you can see Black Tusk in almost every scene)… I guess that WOULD make sense for a Johnny Canuck video…

April 17, 2012Amazing video. Pretty bittersweet to watch now, given the circumstances, but still great.

April 17, 2012Well it’s not aaaaaaaactually over. Think about it. The canucks made it to the game 7 final last year. I think they’ll take the next one. Were they to start down the path of coming back, the hardest hump will be winning the third one in a row game 6. They might win a couple games. But winning that third will be a real test… gotcha… see? You were with me for a sec there. Believe people. Would Johnny Canuck give up? You think Henrik has given up? NO! C’mon, let’s gooooooo!
