Jim Hughson can get a bad rap out East, what for a seeming proclivity towards Vancouver, but if you share that proclivity, he’s pretty enjoyable. Say what you will about his passion for Hockey Night in Canada’s fiftieth consecutive Battle of Ontatio; Hughson is at his best when he calls the Canucks and few complain when CBC taps him to do so.
Some of his finest calls come after Roberto Luongo makes a big save. Immediately followed by “Great save Luongo!” or “Oh what a stop by Luongo!”, it’s typically a highlight of the telecast (provided you can overlook the fact that the desperation stop was likely necessitated by a massive defensive lapse).
With that in mind, Youtuber HockeyFans101 has created this five-minute video. What separates it from other highlight videos? It isn’t just full of amazing Roberto Luongo saves — it’s full of Jim Hughson calling them:
This video is also a quality reminder that, when it comes to these two guys, hockey fans out East don’t know what they’re talking about. Both of them are pretty great, especially when they’re working together.

January 30, 2012Love it. I wish we had the opportunity to listen to more of Hughson calling Canucks games. There’s some poetry with Hughson’s “Great save Luongo” — maybe there’s some linguistic terminology for how syllables and words go together that end up sounding great, but in my mind there’s nothing better than hearing that.

January 30, 2012I always thought it was written
“GREAT
SAAAVE LU-ONGO”

January 30, 2012My personal favourite is the save off Ryan Smyth. If anything has ever looked like a sure goal, that chance did.

January 30, 2012Let’s face it, the only reason that some in the Centre Of The Universe give Hughie a bad rap is because he’s from here. If his resume said “Hometown: North Bay, Ontario”, he’d be revered as the PBP god that he is.

January 30, 2012For me Hughson is a huge part of the playoffs. In the days leading up to round one I think of his calls. “great save, Luongo”, “the Canucks are coming in waves now!” and this year of course, though obviously a one off, “Burrows shoots, Burrows scooooorrrrrressss”.

January 30, 2012And having just watched it there’s only the one Burrows. Regardless.
bs
January 30, 2012I like the way he calls a game. these must have been saves from years past. Luongo hasnt made to many good ones this year

January 30, 2012Good to hear a voice actually favourable to the Canucks on HNIC. It’s the only one.

January 30, 2012So many of those saves come in tied or very close games – clutch saves indeed – awaits a detractor to come up with his gaffes in a montage video now

January 30, 2012Ha. Man, if someone made a 5-minute Luongo gaffes montage set to circus music, we’d post the crap out of that.

January 30, 2012lots of the shots lou looks GREAT on are wide or he swings his glove and
flukes a catch 9/10 hes nowhere near it,He gets credit for dmen stopping shots after he
loses the rebounds then a trickler or fanned shot rolls right at his dead in the water
prone out of the play body. Where my stick Where my stick

January 30, 2012Hughson is #1 … and was also very good calling games for the Blue Jays.
He’s dragged down though by being partnered with less talented guys like Craig Simpson.
If he had a dedicated expert analyst like Ray Ferraro as his colour man, this would be the ultimate.

January 30, 2012omg, I’m so glad you did this. Someone’s got to do a “Great save Khabibulin!” collage. Hughson seems to also take relish in that name…

January 30, 2012YES. Sooooo many great games listened to on CKNW back in the day mainly because of that call.

January 30, 2012Hang on, *is* Hughson getting a bad rap out East? Is there some brewing storm of negativity I’ve been unaware of all this time?
Harrison Mooney
January 30, 2012Yessir. They don’t like him because seems like a Canucks sympathizer. Which is akin to puppy-kicker.

January 30, 2012Wow… just wow. As someone who grew up with the two Jims — Robson and Hughson — I can’t even begin to explain to you how this offends me. Did Robson get this rough of a ride back in the day or was the novelty of an expansion-ish team still protecting the Canucks?
Tom
January 30, 2012To my knowledge Robson never got any flak as he was mostly a local guy. The backlash against Hughson is mostly a result of his gig as the main caller for HNIC. Also the Canucks were mostly bad (barring the early 90s) when Robson was calling games. IMO the criticism against Hughson is tied to the Canucks success over the other Canadian teams.

January 30, 2012Please … let us have him back again for Canuck broadcasts!
Nee
January 30, 2012The save that starts off the video is my favourite. It’s not the best (the Smyth one is, IMO), but the jacked up roar of the crowd (and Hughson) make it great.

February 1, 2012I really really really hope the Leafs don’t make the playoffs, solely because I want Hughson for myself. He’s one of the big reasons I love the playoffs so much. If the Leafs do make the playoffs, I hope somehow TSN gets our 1st round playoff series.
Hughsons_craap
February 9, 2012Hughson is pathetically biased for Vancouver. CBC should send him back to do the Canuck games and find someone else to work the East national game. Better yet, if the CBC would provide the audio feed without commentary — just the crowd audio — and have that as a SAP option that would be best. Cannot even watch the games anymore because of the endless nonsense spewing out of these talking heads!

February 9, 2012I like the way Hughsons_craap thinks! No more commentary — let hockey fans enjoy the game without the BS!
