I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love a good amateur pump-up video. It’s a simple concept, really: splice together a bunch of Canuck highlights, set them to music, and away you go. But there’s an art to it, and there are few in Canuck nation that make that more explicit than Bhavin Solanki.
Solanki is the mastermind behind one of my personal favourite pump-up videos, the Ryan Kesler tribute, “Cinderella Man”. It’s an epic and quite nearly perfect showcase of the Canucks’ centre in all his scowling, skilful, surly wonder. You should watch it. The kid knows how to edit a video.
And now Solanki has made another great one, this time for Roberto Luongo. Check out “I Will”, which, in just over a minute, could reasonably remind some of you that the Canucks number one netminder isn’t so bad after all.
I love the way Solanki pairs the musical claps with the sound of Luongo making a sprawling stick save. It’s tactic he used in the Kesler video as well, selecting a song that’s heavy in percussion and editing the video to synch up perfectly with it. Just like on American Idol, song selection is half the battle, and Bhavin wins that half in a walk.
I’m not sure what the other half is, but Bhavin wins that half too. This video rules.

December 19, 2011Heh, poor Lou… What, even his pump-up video is criticized for not being enough?
Excellent work, both Lou and Solanki!
