Ryan Kesler on Blake Comeau: Canuck hit of the year?

One of the loveliest moments of the Canucks’ performance Sunday night versus the Flames was Ryan Kesler’s thundering open-ice hit on Blake Comeau. Midway through the first period, with the Canucks on a powerplay, the puck came to Comeau  at the side boards, and he attempted to clear the zone. Unfortunately, only a split second after the puck arrived, Ryan Kesler did as well. He absolutely flattened Comeau.

Ryan Kesler seems mean.

Now before you say “Not sure what Comeau’s so upset about”, keep in mind that, clean as this hit was, Comeau probably still didn’t enjoy it all that much. Canuck fans likely did, however, especially since, with Raffi Torres now in Phoenix, these hits are a little less frequent than they were last year. But don’t be misled: this wasn’t the only one. Hit of the year though it might have been, there are indeed other candidates. Here are five.

1) Ryan Kesler on Nick Leddy

Midway through the second period of a game versus the Chicago Blackhawks, a frustrated Ryan Kesler takes a run at Nick Leddy.

2) Alex Edler on Magnus Paajarvi

This is a huge hit. Paajarvi tries to cut wide on Edler, and while he initially looks to have a step, Edler turns and rubs the Oilers’ forward out along the boards with a huge shoulder check.

3) Alex Edler on Jordan Eberle

Pretty much the exact same hit as the one on Paajarvi, except that Edler is facing the other way. Is his right shoulder a hard as his left? Jordan Eberle says yes.

4) Alex Edler on Taylor Hall

Edler’s assault on the Oiler kids continues. Keep him away from Edmonton daycares. Here, he steps into Taylor Hall as the Oilers tries to break out.

5) Dale Weise on Kevin Klein

Perhaps the most Torres-like hit on our list, as Klein gets to the puck in the corner first, but Weise arrives at the same location before he can do anything with it.

So there you have it. Do any of these hits rival Kesler on Comeau, or is is the early frontrunner for Canuck hit of the year?

I wish there was a higher definition #3. As I recall you could see the expressions on the Canuck’s bench pretty clearly.

I would have loved the hit on Comeau even more if not for Kesler’s exaggerated theatrics afterwards. The The Canucks’ reputation for diving is annoying and mostly undeserved, but they do bring it upon themselves sometimes.

      It’s called drawing penalities.

If the ref doesn’t see the moron do it the first time, make sure he sees him do it the second time.

I don’t see no exaggerated theatrics.

When Kes scored the empty-net goal against Colorado, he had his stick decked out in his usual white tape. I’ve never seen someone look so disappointed with a goal as Kesler was then: that wasn’t relief, it was self-loathing at having pity-points thrust upon him in place of consistent, meaningful scoring.

The next game – in Phoenix – Kesler scored again, this time a wicked wrist-shot on a play that punished his old buddy Raffi Torres’ slip-up. The celebration was a purely evil gloat, self-satisfied and goading the home-crowd into hatred. He did it with black tape.

Some time between those games, Ryan Kesler turned to the dark side. Since then he’s had 8 points over five games, and is laying out devastating hits like this one. I don’t know who the Sith Lord in the organization is – there’s certainly something unnerving about Dan Hamhuis’s innocent facade – but when they sat Kesler down and told him to “Give in to your anger,” he listened. Now to mow down the Western Conference like sleeping Younglings at the Jedi Academy.

The Weise hit looked rather like both a charge and an elbow… did he get away with that one unpenalized?
