Thursday night’s 6-5 Canuck loss versus the Nashville Predators was jam-packed with oddities. There was the offensive outburst, as the two teams combined for 11 goals, only three fewer than their entire season series last year. There was the goalie no-show, as Cory Schneider’s hot streak came to a screeching halt with 3 goals on 5 shots and Roberto Luongo only fared marginally better. And, of course, there was that strange little moment when Ryan Kesler scaled the net.

Of course, it made some sense in the moment. Kesler wound up perched above the crossbar as the result of a power move he made to the goal, which, had he not thought on his feet and jumped the net like a cow hurdling the moon, might have resulted in a collision with Anders Lindback. Then, in order to get back down without stepping down on Lindback, Kesler had to swivel around and drop down behind the net. It’s all very reasonable.
Except that it looked completely ridiculous. Kesler less resembles a hockey player here than a bank robber being thwarted by Spiderman or a gymnast working the pommel horse. Reader Jake was kind enough to bless us with a photoshop of the latter.

It’s been said that Kesler has all sorts of core strength, and we can see it at work here. Just offscreen, Sofia Coppola and the girl in the black leotard are staring daggers at her, like in that classic Chemical Brothers video.
And finally, reader @zombotron points out that Kesler has a history of winding up strangely sprawled, so we shouldn’t be all that surprised by shenanigans of this sort.

December 2, 2011Funny articles, spot on. Was a great relief to see someone writing intelligently about the goaltenders lately, so was a bit confused to see your comments above – why do you write Luongo was marginally better, when you mean twice as good, or 40% better — quite a margin!
