The latest “Cabbie Presents” from TSN features everyone’s favourite beleaguered goaltender, Roberto Luongo. Cabbie is brilliant. I’ve been a big fan of his since his days doing “Cabbie Unlimited” and “Cabbie on the Street” with The Score. The guy has an uncanny ability to put professional athletes at ease and get them to answer questions they normally wouldn’t from the mainstream media.
Classic Cabbie collisions with hockey include his frank discussion regarding sticks and knobs, beating Ryan Getzlaf at beach hockey (thanks to some stellar goaltending from D), and the awkwardly hilarious off-ice self-evaluation, in which Jeff Skinner rates his off-ice “endurance” as 2 out of 5.
Cabbie’s previous interview with Luongo came in happier times, when his status as one of the league’s best goaltenders wasn’t being questioned. Instead, it was all about the hair. In this latest edition, Cabbie tries to reach the heart of Luongo after the many criticisms he has faced.
The opening, which visually compares Luongo to Atlas, is brilliant. This leads directly to Cabbie embracing Luongo with a manly, yet comforting hug. The rest of the interview is just icing on a fantastic cake. And when Luongo suggests that his only response to the haters would be to give them a hug, it’s a beautiful moment.
Luongo clearly has a great sense of humour, though it’s easy to see how it gets misunderstood: he’s too convincing. You almost believe that he’s a diehard fan of Jersey Shore. Almost. But everyone knows his real favourite show is Desperate Housewives.
