If it wasn’t already quite apparent that Canuck fans are a strange lot, consider some of the curious Canuck-themed jack-o-lanterns featured on the NHL’s official Facebook page. Or, better yet, just key in on the one that features a carving of Ryan Kesler’s nude photo from ESPN Magazine’s “The Body Issue”. That one should do it.

What the what? There was a while there when naked Kesler was practically everywhere, but I can safely say that the side of a pumpkin was among the places I did not expect to find him. Colour me surprised.

Colour me impressed, too. Take a close look at the glory that is the Naked Keslantern, and you will see that this isn’t some half-hearted carving. No sir, whoever did this definitely didn’t skimp on the details.

For example, check out the bulging quadricep on Kesler’s left leg, or the protruding deltoid at his left shoulder. That’s some quality shading right there.

Or, better yet, note the notches in his stomach that allow his sculpted abs to capture some of the candle’s glow. That’s impressive, too. This is the first jack-o-lantern I’ve ever seen that looks airbrushed.

And I can’t say enough good things about the job this carver (or carvers) did around Kesler’s head. They captured his expression perfectly; the facework is absolutely top-notch. And be sure you take a moment to appreciate the detail on his trademark Astro Boy haircut.

Clearly, this was a labour of love.

Edit: the creator of the pumpkin, Lila Learn, has found our website and provided us with photo evidence that she is who she says she is. We have decided to pass said evidence on to you. Congratulations on being awesome, Lila.

I don’t know how to feel. It’s in the range of “Clearly impressive carving skills” to “I’m watching Ryan Kesler and his family from his neighbor’s tree” vibe.

I saw that on FB a few days ago. Definitely hilarious and impressive.

Also hilarious: same album, the guy who crudely carved a face on his pumpkin (looked like he just jammed 3 holes into it) and called it the ‘Ovech-kin’. Especially since this was sandwiched between dozens of team logo pumpkins of actual artistic merit.

What can I say… Kesler is awesome!
I never expected my pumpkin to take on a life of it’s own. We were all just sitting around cleaning out our pumpkins and talking about the canucks…and of course someone mentioned the ESPN photo… and right then I decided to do it. I figured it would be good for a few laughs, but I never thought it would go this far :)
    Here’s the album:
