Good news for anti-fantasy owners, bad news for regular fantasy owners: these guys haven't done this yet this season.
With over 100 entries in the first ever Official PITB Anti-Fantasy Hockey Pool, I had to teach myself some spreadsheet tricks to get everything calculating smoothly. Fortunately, I am both a great teacher and a fantastic student, so everything came together nicely.
Anyone who picked players from the Anaheim Ducks got off to a strong start, as Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, and Lubomir Visnovsky all failed to find the scoresheet. The one exception was George Parros, of all people, who tallied an assist on the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the Sharks. He was the only player in the “Gritty Goons” category to score a point.
Unsurprisingly, two of the players in the “Injury Prone Players” category are already injured: Tim Connolly has yet to play a game for the Leafs with an injury “more significant” than was originally thought, while Ales Hemsky left his second game of the season early with an injury and will undergo an MRI.
Other good picks so far include Joe Thornton, Dustin Byfuglien, and *ahem* Roberto Luongo.
On the other end, Thomas Vanek and Jeff Skinner are looking like poor picks through the first week: both have 6 points, with Vanek scoring his in just 3 games to Skinner’s 5. Ilya Bryzgalov has also jumped out to a terribly good start, earning 5 points with his 3 wins and a shutout.
The big surprise, however, has to be Al Montoya, who has caused dismay amongst his owners by picking up 2 wins early and looking like he might not be the backup he was originally slated to be. Montoya has started all three games for the Islanders and with DiPietro injured (again) and Nabokov not even dressing for the first two games, the job appears to be Montoya’s to lose. That’s bad news for anti-fantasy owners who were hoping for as few points out of the “Perennial Backups” category as possible.
You can view the complete standings below. Tied for the lead, currently, are Jeremy and Will with 9 points each. Both ended up with zeroes in 8 out of 15 categories and both got a good lack of production out of Perry and Selanne. Bringing up the rear is Raj, who picked Vanek, Skinner, Bryzgalov, and Claude Giroux, who scored 5 points to start the season. Those high scorers are killer, but she also picked a number of mid-range scorers who have performed far too well for her, like Kovalchuk, Landeskog, and Yandle. That kind of consistency will kill you.
Look for Anti-Fantasy updates every Saturday morning.

October 15, 2011I’m 60……curse you Jeff Skinner.

October 15, 2011The guy is figuratively on fire right now.

October 15, 201152…dammit. I honestly forgot who I chose. I’m gonna go check.
Daniel Wagner
October 15, 2011Giroux and Tavares were your big scorers. And it looks like Tavares is going to be very, very good this year. Which is very, very bad for you.

October 15, 2011Dang it, #91. I’m pretty sure if I picked all my pools with this strategy I’d do a lot better in them…
Rituro
October 15, 201173rd?! Aaaargghh. I try to pick winners for a money pool, second-to-last. I try to pick losers for an anti-pool, 73rd. Something is fundamentally wrong with my draft strategy.
Jeremy
October 15, 2011I’m very pround of the underachievers I’ve chosen, enjoying their race to the bottom (top?). I may have a knack for this, considering how poorly I’m doing in my actual hockey pools so far this year.
Raj
October 15, 2011Oh no! I’m last (first?) Way to underacheive…
PS. I know i have a sterotypically brown guy first name, but i am a girl

October 15, 2011Akh! My apologies, I’ve fixed it.

October 15, 2011No wories, its not too big of a deal!
Daniel Wagner
October 15, 2011It’s a huge deal! The BIGGEST deal! THERE’S NO DEAL BIGGER!!!

October 15, 2011I’m a solid 37th, I would be lower but I had Kovalchuk, Vanek and Lombardi,
Timmmy
October 15, 2011Hard to be unhappy with equal 23rd, especially with my fantasy experience.
Eric Blacha
October 15, 2011I’m glad to be tied with a PITB member, but not so happy to be in a 6 part tie, and 17th place. Damn.
Eric Blacha
October 15, 201117 points meant. 32nd place. Damn, damn.
gog
October 16, 2011Hmm, I gotta be happy with being in the top 20, but Kovalchuk and Bryz could be my undoing in the long run it seems. Feels much easier to have players from teams I dislike too, I really root for them to fail (Ducks, Flyers, Devils etc)…
BeCanucks
October 16, 2011Wooo, 69, drink!

October 16, 2011wow i can’t believe i’m seventh. God Bless you Tim Conolly, you sweet fragile prince.
