Last night, Lady Gaga did at the VMAs what she always does, surprising everyone with a highly controversial costume. No, it wasn’t a meat dress or an egg, and there were no stiletto heels where the heels are penises for some reason (maybe NSFW, depending on how forgiving your work is of genitalia on footwear) — instead, Lady Gaga came to the MTV awards show dressed as the most controversial figure in recent memory: Roberto Luongo.
Shortly after Gaga’s opening number, Puck Daddy documented the surprising visual similarity between Gaga’s male alter ego, Jo Calderone, and Vancouver’s number one netminder. It’s kind of terrifying. Ultimate hat tip to Greg Wyshynski for this one.
But, when you think about it, Gaga and Luongo have more similarities than some may realize. Both are Italians — Gaga’s real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — and both made headlines this year for being on the edge of glory. Considering Luongo’s relationship with the city of Vancouver these days, you could argue that both are caught in a bad romance (or a love game). Speaking of games, both have problems with the big game — for Gaga, it’s hunting it, and for Luongo, it’s playing in it (ba-zing).
Both have a real tendency to baffle the media. For instance, Gaga does things like this:
