If you didn’t already know that this photo is from the dying seconds of Friday’s game with the Chicago Blackhawks, you’d be left intrigued by what, exactly, is up there. In fact, I look forward to two or three years down the road when someone comes across this image in a Google Images search and wonders if maybe something with wings had somehow gotten into the building and was doing barrel rolls in the rafters. A bat? A robin? Batman and Robin? Really, the possibilities are endless if you don’t already know that it’s just the boring old puck.
I find this photo odd because of the looks on the Canucks’ faces. Kevin Bieksa seems amazed. Roberto Luongo is terrified. Ryan Kesler sports a quiet dread. Dan Hamhuis wears acceptance. Judging simply by the looks on their faces, I’d wager that it’s a chariot of fire.
Turns out, after I blew the photo up, that’s exactly what it was. Now those looks make sense. Roberto Luongo seems genuinely concerned with the state of his soul. Dan Hamhuis is probably fairly confident he’s about to get picked up. By the way, if the above image is a bit too real for the heathens PITB readers, my wife suggested I do up a kinder, gentler, more religiously neutral version.
Now it just looks like Kevin Bieksa is hoping to catch an Easter egg in his mouth. How seasonally topical.

April 17, 2011Lame that the thread on the Canucks forum got deleted – there is a pinned thread that says with all the heavy playoff traffic, they’re deleting based on topic titles alone. Moderation on the board seems to be about as consistent as current NHL reffing standards.
