Now that the first round of Champions League ties have been played what have we learned?

1) Italian football is in trouble- with all three Italian teams losing at home it is likely that no team from Italy will make it to the next round. Which means that they will almost certainly lose a Champions League spot in two years time.

2) German football is on the rise- Germany should have two teams in the final eight and will take the extra Champions League spot from Italy.

3) The English Premier League isn’t as bad as everybody says- the common theory this season is that this is a weak year in England, yet at least three teams should go through and Arsenal even have a chance of beating Barcelona.

4) Jose Mourinho (pictured) knows how to win in Europe- an away draw at Lyon may not be a great result but Madrid are favourites to progress to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2005.

5)- Winning at home isn’t easy in the first leg- Only Arsenal managed a win on home soil, and they needed to come from behind.
